Interesting 1893+ depression time Waltham model 92.

My favorite 18 size rr p.w. is the 92. Recenty added an interesting to me lower grade 21j. Has original metal dial with Canadian hour hands. In an old exhibition case. Not much used. Decorated movement. C. St. model like this one is 1600 qty. Learned it is early model of 3 variations. Secondary only to Vanguard in quality.

Photo loading impossible from my new 14GP camera. Couple photos in dim light from old 3.3 G.P. Canon load easily.

Have learned from a different forum the dial and hands, as well as the unmarked case, are not original with the ~1895 movement. The dial is an uncommon Waltham option from about 1910.

I would also like to know if 17j Appleton and 23j Vanguard represent lowest and top grades of
    model 92?

Model 1892 Appleton Tracy can not be considered a low grade, as seen by here my later date example adjusted to 5 positions. Earlier versions were 3 pos. P.S. Bartlett was lower on the range, only adjusted to temperature.

Adding to this model 92 more example photos. Seems to me the variety of movement names, decorations and mechanical features makes this model a single fine collecting activity. Have many to add but start with one and anyone that wants to add more. artb

    Art,

With regard to your quality question-I'd consider the 17j Vanguards from the first couple of runs-as well as the 21j from those same runs-to be among the highest grade 92 models.

I have 17 and 21j examples from the first run, and the finish on those is much nicer than my late run 23j Vanguard.

BEN; you confirm my info acquired from Bill Tapp. Bill got very bad case of pneumonia. Has another month to go for a very difficult recuperation. As you know he has a fine collection of 92s. As a caretaker for some of these I restarted this thread. Have not photographed all yet. Included are the high quality early ones as you explain. Hope to show these soon. artb.

    Art,

Sorry to hear that Bill is under the weather. I'd heard that he'd been absent from the BHS meetings for a month two as well as not attending the regional this year. I hope that he's able to get well soon.

92 models are a lot of fun. I've been gravitating more toward the earlier ones, but have been able to pick up some interesting ones over the years. Some are no longer with me. At least of the(relatively) common 92s, some of the most interesting to me are the ones with a factory conversion dial that is marked with the grade and jewel count at 9:00. Here's a Crescent St I had a while back

By the way, the lowest grade 92 is probably the Royal.

I have seen maybe 100 different 92s, but not that dial. I have a thin ROYAL 12 size o.f. 1,75x,xxx. Earliest Waltham 12 size? artb

Private label 92s are not uncommon, but they're not that easy to find, either.

The same could be said of Texas private labels.
