    Jaeger-Lecoultre K480 Real?

    Hey, guys!

This is my first post on Watchuseek! I've been coming on here for about a year, and reading the great insight on watches has helped me a little with the learning curve as I am relatively new to watch collecting.

Anyway, I was wondering if you guys would be able to decipher whether this has a real case or not. The actual movement looks real, but since the case back isn't signed, I wanted to make sure and I thought some of you could help. Pictures below:

It's obvious to me that the strap and crown are not original, but I wasn't expecting that, to be honest. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I am not positive about the case. looking at the movement mounting screws I would have to guess that JLC would probably do a little better in precision. But that said-its a beautiful piece and if the case number checks out-it may well be a entry model JLC from the 50s/60s. I am pretty sure the crown is not original though that is not a big problem. wait and someone will have access to a jlc data base and tell you if the ref # checks out. The dial is also a tough call. If its a redial-its a nice one but again-i am not expert enough on jlc logos to say for sure.

welcome to vintage forum btw. good luck

Wow! Thanks for your reply. Wasn't expecting one so quickly. I'm looking at the Jaeger-Lecoultre signature and it looks a bit off; specifically around the 'JAE' area. The 'A' looks a bit too close to the 'J'. It might be the angle. I asked the seller to take a picture of the face head-on for a better vantage point. In any case, thank you for your help and your warm welcome!

okay=something does look 'off' about the J in the logo. if seller is presenting this as 'authentic' thats an issue. If presented as a redial and priced accordingly-then its a matter of taste and criteria.

I'm thinking the same - the 'aeger' is too close to the 'J', especially when you compare it to the other end of the logo... at which there's something amiss too! Did the dial printer slip(!!!)?

    Beautiful movement though!!

edit - question for the JLC fluent: wouldn't the Geneva stripes be aligned north-south in a pukka JLC case? (I'm questioning this myself as it looks like that'd put the crown at 4 with that movement??)

So the seller wasn't 100% happy about having to take another picture. You can chalk it up to being lazy but I think it's fishy. Here's the picture. He said he could not take a higher resolution picture than this one.

He's not advertising it as a redial. Here's the link Jaeger LeCoultre Super Slim Caliber K 480 C Vintagetop Men Wristwatch RARE Watch | eBay

The price also seems a bit too good to be true, but that could be because people are waiting till the last hour to bid.

    Thanks for you guys' help!

    Hi Guss,

There is a saying on the forum, "Buy the seller". Even if you got a relatively
good price, you could be worrying about the originality for a long time. JLC
made a lot of watches and they are still making them. There will be other
opportunities. In my opinion you should let someone else have a chance at
    this deal.

    Thanks,

Yeah, I'm going to take your advice. It's better to be safe than sorry. Sometimes one can get caught up by the desire of the watch and make some... irrational decisions, pun intended. I'm sure if I keep looking I'll find a watch I'm more comfortable buying at a price I can afford. Thanks for the advice!

    Re: Jaeger-Lecoultre K480 Real?

There's a reason why sellers do not show a straight-on image of the dial. That's were the defects/ mis-alignment show up best. I don't know enough about JLC to say for certain that this is or isn't real, but it does appear to be a 'marriage' watch. The case is practically brand new, while the dial and movement show wear from several decades.

At the very best, a (poor) redial with a swapped-out crown. You know that having an original dial is a big part of the value.

    Hi and welcome
I don't like the dial or the hands.
I would surely want to research that piece more versus adverts
