Job lot story. 1 – USA watch company - Marquis/Mercury

    Hi folks

This was chucked in with a job lot I bought the other day. The dial is proudly marked as US made, but of course the movement is actually Swiss. It's engraved Mercury, but is in reality a FHF 170. Inside the case back the branding is 'Master Sutton,' and again made in USA.

There are a couple of little twists to it, but I have no illusions that I've just struck gold; I'll fling it back onto eBay I guess. But my curiosity was piqued: anyone ever hear of Marquis or Mercury as brands before? Funny little down-turned dial edges so that the case is effectively curved; I don't recall seeing such a particular approach before. A lovely red gold toned case, too. But small at around 22mm square, so a ladies watch.

    Thanks in advance!

    nice little fella,very chic.

Marquis has several entries both Swiss and US brand owners: Mikrolisk - The horological trade mark index

I didn't see a dial like that before, could it be that it was re-cased into not a perfect match in its life somewhere?

Thanks for reminding me about Mikrolisk, I guess I have to remember to go there as obsessively as I go to Ranfft! I'd vote for the Waltham connection, in the absence of any other info.

As to the dial, that's what I thought, but it actually seems to make sense when you have it in your hand. The whole thing looks better integrated than my pictures would have it. Very unusual.

I agree it is a nice piece, similar to ones made by Longines.

Mercury was a trade name for

I have a Montrose that is very similar. Sometimes I wish I had smaller wrists.

No, but I've heard of a Mercury Marquis. Only it isn't a watch :
