    Just Acquired Universal Geneve Uni-compax

Just picked this one up. It is 34mm. I thought there would be a serial number on the movement but I only see it on the case back. Looking up the serial number I'm getting this from being about 1950? Any thoughts by anyone? Pretty cool little watch to me and the movement looks and seems to operate just fine. It was recently serviced and guaranteed for 2 years. My only complaint is that I was told it was 37mm but it is 34, however I kind of like it, and holds a 20mm strap with no problem although it looks more like 19mm between the lugs.

Looks like a nice watch. Some sellers will sneakily give the size of the case including the crown, which is very dishonest, since the difference in value between a 34mm and 37mm vintage watch is huge, everything else being equal. That would definitely be grounds for a return if you feel the watch is too small for you or if the price was too high for a 34mm watch.

19mm lug spacing was quite common in that era, and 19mm straps are still readily available off the shelf.

Yeah- no question I could return it and almost would out of principle, but I just kind of find myself liking it, and I like having a 1950 in my collection. I think the price I got for it is fair even for a 34mm, but not as good of a bargain as I thought it would be at 37mm. No question they would take it back, but I think I'm going to keep it. I have a 35mm diver - a 60s Zodiac Seawolf, so this complements it I think. All of my modern watches are larger, but I'm finding myself liking these vintage sizes for a change. Even my modern watches I tend to keep at 38-39mm size with a few 41mm exceptions.

I think it's maybe more like 19.5mm lug width, which seems kind of surprising for a watch that small. I'll have to double check it. It fits the 20mm strap more easily than some modern 19mm watches I have. I usually just put 20mm straps on my 19mm watches.

    Beautiful piece. Congratulations!

As for the size, I wouldn't bother with that. I myself used to dislike anything less than 44-45 mm. And then... the vintage bug stung me! When I acquired my first 31 mm watch, all my concerns and prejudices about watch sizes vanished in the moment I put it on my wrist...

Now, I can't wear anything larger than 35-36 mm. To me, particularly, it makes all the most sense, as I wear formal attire to work (suit and tie). I came to like small watches more and more, for they really make a fine companion to a long-sleeved shirt.

Sometimes gold lugs can get slightly bent; I have a watch like that where the strap is a tight fit for that reason.

Nice! Can always put on a bund strap to give the illusion of wearing a bit larger.

I probably won't do that with this one, but I have a 35mm Zodiac Seawolf that I think would be really cool like that. I actually saw a picture of a US soldier in Vietnam wearing it on something like a bund.

Because this one takes a 20mm strap, that alone beefs it up.
