Just wanted to share this with you, my friends

I took some embroidery of my mum's to be framed today and left with this picture,

    Name: IMG_1231_zps83abe4b7.jpg

Now Nelson is a great hero of mine and being a good old Norfolk boy like the great man himself I had to have a picture of him on my wall, I would like to own his watch but I'm not a multi millionaire so this humble old picture will have to do.

See I did get some watch related stuff in

Very nice picture Matt! I only need to know two things, how old is it, and can I have it?

Thanks Bob, the date on the bottom is 1829 It looks to have some age to it so I feel this is correct (and I know the fellow that old it to me ) and sorry Bob it's not for sale. Now all I need to find is a picture of HMS Agamemnon

Yes, it's Nelson Bronte, it refers to the Title of the Duke of Bronte given to him by the King of Naples, Ferdinand 1st and here is a list of the dukes. Cool stuff.

Thanks for that! I didn't know he was a duke in Italy

Here is something with a similar story. I came across this watch by Ellicot at the V&A a few years ago. It belonged to Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore in south India. He too died in battle and this watch was taken from his body at the battle field.

It's funny you mention Napoleon. He wanted to form an alliance with Tipu Sultan against the British. The battle of the Nile, which Nelson won, helped prevent that from happening. Now we just need Napoleon's watch to keep this watch related. Don't want a rap on our knuckles, do we?

    Kind regards

    Aditya

Ha, were these times when rulers themselves went to battle

Congrats, Matt, for that find! Nelson is one of my personal heroes, too. One of the first thing I learned in English was his famous signal immediately before the start of the battle of Trafalgar: "England expects each man to do his duty."

My late mum gave me C. S. Forrester's 'Hornblower' books to read - which only deepened the emotional bond I had with Nelson after whose life the hero of the series is patterned, of course.

When I was in London a few years ago I visited his coffin in St. Paul's. Impressive display there.

After all's been said and done, there's a lot more said than done...

Patina: little pieces of history put on old watches and forgotten there by the maker of time

"Miracles?", he asked. "Forget about miracles. Those who walk on water just know where the stepstones are."
