Keep Your Heads Down, Here Comes The Air Warden.

And not the one that our parents or grandparents knew during WWII.

Look what showed up in the new J. Crew catalog. It's a pretty good replica of the 1943 Bulova Air Warden (thanks to plainsmen for the pic), that guardians of the city streets wore during the war. The price is a snip at $199 or $150 if you know the secret code SALENEWS. Ooops.

But where the original had a 15 jewel 10AK movement, this one has a no-jewel Japanese Miyota caliber 1L45 movement. Quartz of course. Couldn't they have produced a limited edition with a decent mechanical movement? My father would roll over in his grave. Luckily he wasn't buried with his Bulova.

That's a pretty faithful representation of the original, yes the lume is a bit garish but the lug shape is pretty spot on and the dial isn't the worst I've seen on a modern version of a vintage watch, whats the size? i bet they've made it huge. Just once I'd like to see one of these Retro watches in a size close to the original

quartz v's mechanical equals cheap v's expensive (relatively).....Perhaps they just did their marketing....?? Some just don't care what's under the bonnet as long as it revs.....

Yes it's not bad - apart from the movement. Diameter of the case is 38.5 mm. So certainly larger than the original, but not massive.

    From the same catalog.

    Product Details

Presenting the watch of the hour: a white-faced version of our popular military watch (also created with legendary American watchmaker Timex). Based on an iconic 1940s military style from the brand's archives (and only available here), this watch boasts a subtly distressed face and an olive-tone watch strap. It's built for the trenches with a quartz analog movement and luminescent hands (not to mention it's water-resistant up to 50 meters).

I think I would have a more than a subtly distressed face if I had to wear this. The dial looks like a drunken Friday afternoon in Mumbai.
