    Leonidas Triple Calendar Pricing

    Hi everyone.

I'm looking at purchasing my first vintage watch. I have a few criteria that I'm aiming for: (1) triple calendar with moonphase, (2) some color on the dial, and (3) sub $1,500.

I came across a 1945's Leonidas Triple Calendar and wanted some input on it. The movement is functioning properly and will have a year warranty from the watch store. The dial/case was restored at some point - which I'm not sure is a positive or negative.

What do you think would be a fair price to pay for a piece like this? Also, open to any suggestions you all may have.

    Thanks!

To be quite honest, most collectors would not go near such a heavily restored watch. It has some value, but nothing near $1500. I'm pretty sure you can get an off-brand moon-phase triple-calendar in a plated case with an original dial for less than $1000. It won't look so clean and shiny, but it will actually be more collectible and valuable.

Vintage watches generally look old. If you want a watch that looks like this one, I honestly feel that you would be better off buying a vintage-style new watch.

Edit: Or to turn things around, if you're willing to spend $1500, I think you can probably get a triple-calendar moon-phase in a stainless case that hasn't been tampered with, as long as you don't insist on a jumbo size.

I figured the restoration would affect the value. I've had an eye out for Zodiac's but haven't found anything to my liking. Do you know of any other brands that made triple calendars?

My personal favorite is Movado. Omega, Heuer, Breitling, Gubelin are also famous for higher end triple-calendar moonphase watches and probably not in your budget.

Lots more ... Pierce, Angelus, Record, Enicar, and many "no-name" examples.

I think that Zodiac would seem to be a very good option for you given your requirements and budget. When it comes to vintage watches, the perfect one is not always available the first time you look. You need to hunt and be patient. Research Zodiacs and wait for the right watch. It could take some time.

    Re: Leonidas Triple Calendar Pricing

Here's a thread when I started my search for a moonphase, with specific attention to Leonidas. As Dan mentioned, keep in mind that they'll be smaller in diameter. I rather prefer it that way, with my minimum at 35mm (excl. crown). And what makes a considerable difference in vintage is the presence and character that can only be achieved through age.

Edit: Oh, and I'm still looking for one myself. I've actually settled in very well on enjoying the search.
