Looking for more information on this Chalet

So I purchased two identical Chalets on eBay. Dial says Chalet, 5 atm tested, swiss made. The movement says one jewel unadjusted, Webster Watch Co, M S G. and I think it did say swiss made on the movement too (right in front of unadjusted). So what I am looking for is any information about this watch. This is my first mechanical watch although I was wanted an automatic i ended up with this. I wish i read the title more carefully , and demanded photos of the movement but I'm still excited for this! Any history on Chalet brand and the movement would be appreciated. My plans are to see if I can get it cleaned up and running fairly cheap.. I just love the way it looks and can't wait to get it on my wrist! Do you think I could swap in an automatic movement for cheaper?

Re: Looking for more information on this Chalet

    Hi there.

The movement is a Baumgartner 866(CLD) see bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: Baumgartner 866(CLD) This was a mass-produced cheap and robust movement which is found in many different brands. There is a discussion here: https://forums.watchuseek.com/f11/bau...od-605377.html

I don't know anything for sure about the Chalet brand, but there are quite a few about.

Putting an automatic movement in may be very problematic. Movements are put into cases which have been designed to take them - and tiny differences in dimensions can mean that a different movement does not fit properly, or the back won't go on, or the stem doesn't line up exactly with the whole in the case. Also the date wheel on your watch is part of the movement - a replacement movement's dates might not appear properly in the date window. In short, easier said than done.

You could ask a watchmaker to look at it for you and give you a quote for fixing it, but personally I'd look for a working example.

Thanks Marrick! I couldn't resist once I saw the dial, case, and hands!

Now if I find a working 866CLD for cheap on eBay I'll be set! brilliant! just have a watchmaker switch them out! Now will this make it a frankenwatch?

No - swapping like for like is fine.

I found one on eBay! Except it does not have a date wheel, are those easy to install? Am I safer just taking them to the watchmaker? But then again, it is not as fun and I was thinking of investing in some tools and at least try it myself and then play with the "dead" movement.. The only hard part is taking off the hands.. need special tools...

Ahhh.. I'm so excited! My first mechanical movement that I can play with! Woohoo!

I don't know - someone else might. But I do know that date wheels are very fiddly.

This HOW TO CLEAN AND OIL A VINTAGE MECHANICAL WRIST WATCH OR POCKET WATCH REPAIR is a very useful guide to how to get started. You would need a set of screwdrivers a pair of tweezers and maybe a hand puller (I use a very cheap one and find it adequate) as a minimum. Good luck.

Definately looks like it's missing the rotating divers bezel.
