Model 1883, year 1890 Waltham 15 jewel pocket watch.

I just opened up my pocketwatch to get the correct data. This belonged to either my paternal great grandfather, or great great grandfather. I received it in non-working order with the "crystal" pictured. I had it serviced in roughly 2000.

Beautiful. I've never seen one with a crystal like that. Then again I am very new to pocket watches.

I'm actually more intrigued by the case; Waltham, to my knowledge, didn't produce a lot of cases; the industry at the time had mostly separated watch movement makers from case makers thanks to wide support for sizing standards. Early Walthams often had factory cases, but I'd thought they mostly got out of that business by the 1890's.

I've never really looked into these, so that is very interesting.

I think Waltham spun off their case business as Crescent sometime in the 1890s.

In any case, this is a nice "Frostie" movement. This name comes from the plate finish, which is matted(frosted) with polished areas to form the pattern. It's sort of the inverse of normal watch decoration, where the plates are polished and then fine abrasives are used to add the design. Waltham collectors-myself among them-tend to really like "frosties."
