More unpopular pocketwatches. Waltham Maximus smalls

First 12 size maximus was model 1894. 1901 sample here. Also here is 1919 slightly smaller 10 size. Uncommon and a superb high quality accurate piece. Someone special ordered with the enamel decoration. These small ones are rarer and initially listed for higher $ than the popular 16 size sold at the same time as their best production grades. Note the diamond end stones used in the Maximus.Competitors: 920, 922 Hamilton; 190 Lord Elgin.

Please explain why these are labelled 'unpopular'?

The Maximus was one of there best made watches but they cost so much that no body could afford to buy it that mite be why it was unpopular.

Collector pricing has been much lower for the small sized pocketwatches. The demand has been more for the RR approved larger models that were favored by the old timers as more of a prestige item, and the influence of advertising. Pocket watches were a security item. The larger ones had more gold and you got more from the pawn shop.
But times are changing. The old timers conditioned by tradition are fading away and others now appreciate quality more universally, but still percieved value has not yet equalized. Also my personal perception for relative watch popularity among forum members is that ww. are much more interesting than any pocketwatch.

An ebay seller just got $2500. for the 12 size Elgin 190 in 14k. One indication of demand improvement.

    Oh. My. Lord.

    Stunning.

I'm guessing "unpopular" doesn't equate with cheap...
