My Homemade Double Albert + Fobbie

    *Peekus*

    Hello...

I haven't been here in months...Does anyone remember me?

I'm here today because I just finished making my own Double-Albert pocketwatch chain:

It's nothing fancy. It's mostly made of brass, and the fixings at the ends are scrap pieces from older, cheap, broken chains that served no practical purpose.

The two halves are 10 inches long, with a drop in the middle, of 4 inches. The pocketwatch is in the right pocket, and in the other pocket, I have my vest-pocket fountain pen from 1920s.

Is 4 inches too long for a center fob-drop? Should it perhaps be 2 or 3 inches? Or even just 1 inch?

    Hahaha!! No.

I bought the chain cheap, from the local thrift-shop, and I cut it up and set it at the right length, and opened and shut the links to fit in the clasps and bars and stuff, using two pairs of pliers. The bits and pieces that go onto the chain, I already had at home. I scavenged them from cheap, broken watch-chains over the years. But I could never find a length of brass chain long enough to make a complete D.A. until now.

So now I have three complete chains.

    1. Single Albert + fob-drop
    2. Bolt-ring chain (for trousers)
    3. Double Albert + fob-drop

Well done! I'm not sure about the length of the centre drop - maybe a bit long, but it's really great. Now you've reminded me that I really need to do the same as I'm not wearing my pocket watches as much as I should.

Thanks, guys. I wear my pocketwatch every day. I'd be lost without it. It's part of my style, now. Whenever I want to check the time, I instinctively search for my watch-chain, not my shirt-cuff!

First class job on making the chain; it might not have cost you a lot in dollar terms, I take it?

About the 4" fob drop: it might look a bit long but the end really needs to hang lower than the two loops going into the pockets, so that is quite balanced. Imagine it to be shorter then it would not look as good.

The chain was about 3 feet long, and $4. It originally was a necklace, and came with some cheap brass, heart on the end. It was clearly some cheap, junky costume jewellery. But the chain itself, I could tell, was something strong and substantial. And you need that when it's watch-chain, for obvious reasons.

So I bought the chain and modified it for my own uses.

Methinks I'll strike a balance, and make the drop 3 inches.

looks fine to me, well done. the fob is a bit largish/round, perhaps oval/teardrop shape point down will balance out nicer. was wondering where ya went, nice to see you posting again.
