National Watch Co. First B.W. Raymond Elgin

Double presentation plain big heavy 18k gold 18 size keywind. The best of the first Elgin models made for many years and later used as r.r. watch.
Serial number from 1868-9. A common configuration for case, but not in 18k. Must have been an heirloom. Inscriptions seem to have been done same time although 43 years apart.

Did you get it a long time ago? Sadly, many early watches have lost their gold cases to scrappers by now. I have a B.W. Raymond from 1874, not much different from yours. Case long gone.

It must not have been used much; the single case screw design took a harsh toll on cases (most of the ones I've seen have resorted to using a small, thin washer under the case screw to keep the case in place). This one still has it, and on a 18k gold case, that's impressive.

Had about 30 years. Fairly common keywinders like this got scrapped without much remorse and with its considerable gold weight it is a miraculous surviver. I guess I saved during the 1979+ gold inflation.
