    Need opinions on vintage chronographs

I am thinking of buying a 60's Hamilton chronograph (Landeron cal. 248) for about $500. But before I pull the trigger, I am wondering what other options exist for this amount of money in vintage chronos. I have a soft spot for Hamiltons, since I own two very old Hammy railroad pocketwatches though I'd love an old Heuer or Omega Speedmaster. But I think these latter ones are going to be at least twice what I can afford. Any other marques I should consider or places to look in my price range? I'd prefer late 60's/early 70's.

    Cheers.

You may consider Tissot, LeJour, Omega, Chronograph Suisse (mostly more expensive), Oris. There are tons of chronos on ebay, especially some less expensive with Valjoux 7733 or 7735 movements.

Here you go Louis, not a Valjoux 7735, but a 7733 and 7734 respectively. The only difference is the 7734 has a date a 6 0-clock.

    1971 Breitling with Valjoux 7733

    1968 Wakmann with Valjoux 7734

And just for good measure a LeJour from the 60's with a Landeron 248

If you want more details and pics of the movement go to the excellent ranfft site:

Hope this helps and good luck in your search.

    Cheers

Sorry Gary, I was only kidding. Mike surely knows what I meant. Wanted to see a 7735 for the first time.

 I fell for that one hook line and sinker, I'm with you now. That 7735 sure is one elusive beast . Next time I'll engage brain before I reply.

Re: Need opinions on vintage chronographs

Personally, I have always thought early seventies chronographs with the old TDB-K (Tenor Dorley Brac - Kelek) movements really zany! They were the ones with the funny subdial layout - permanent second at 6:00, chronograph minutes at 2:30, chronograph hours at 11:00! Plus a date at 9:00! Also available with a digital "normal time" display!!! And it had a pseudo-column wheel (same sort as that found in the ETA 2894)! What more can you ask for?!!

Nope, you caught me - I meant a Valjoux 7734 but you already know that. Btw: Try google to find Valjoux 7735, astonishing what you´ll find over there, even a Breitling with Valjoux 7735
