You need to get the serial number that's on the movement. Then go here and select the manufacturer and serial number. https://pocketwatchdatabase.com/

Open the rear two covers and you will see the movement. I bet the stem is frozen because it is not a Stemwinder. Probably key wind key set from the back. Just an initial guess.

You will want clear pictures of the movement, clear pictures of the case trademarks and then all can be revealed.

Cool! Exactly what I thought was stuck in that case.

I'm not too familiar with Howard's, so someone else will have to give you specifics.

What I can tell you is that the movement has been recased. Howard sizes are slightly different from normal American watch sizes. This one had been made to fit that case.

The stem doesn't do anything. In the picture below, the red circle is the setting square and the green is the winding square. You will need a key that fits these to wind and set.

If you plan on running this watch, it will definitely need to be properly serviced. Having a watchmaker disassemble, clean, oil and time the watch will get rid of old dirt and gummy oil and dust that will form an abrasive substance and damage the parts of your watch. Even if it runs and keeps great time, it won't for long if it's not properly cared for.

It's a neat movement. I know when I think of E Howard, this is what comes to mind!

Sorry you replied while I was typing that out. You can find economy sets of keys on the old auction site. You could take it to a jeweler and see if they have a key.

What I've done in the past is buy the economical set of all sizes of keys and I use these to see what size I need, and then find a cool old key of the same size to keep with the watch.

Did a little more digging. The movement is a series III, N size, looks like it's come from the late 1860s. Maybe early 1870s. I'm sure someone with more experience can narrow that date down.

Wow, that barrel is interesting! Looks like you wind COUNTER clockwise, with Geneva stopworks, based on the click and the teeth on the top of the barrel, but there's a SECONDARY click engaging teeth pointing the other direction, and of course in the end the barrel teeth have to turn the same way. Anyone know a good explainer on Reed's Patent barrel?
