According to a Gruen specific website, the style code on the inside of the caseback indicates it was made in 1943. Could this be the case? The style doesn't strike me as being from that era...

    It's a Gruen 510CA:bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: Gruen 510CA
1950s is the period of manufacture then...
Can be a franken, I don't know if it is, but the dial doesn't suggest that it could be a "transplant" from a gold watch (which would explain a new case).
This resource:Use Style Numbers to Date Your Vintage Gruen Watch
    has a caveat, which states:
Swiss and solid gold cases sometimes do not have the numerical pair as well. These watches are not valid candidates for using the Style Number dating method detailed here.

Thank you! This is a Swiss case, so that makes sense.

It doesn't appear to be Frankenstein. Everything seems original.

How owe much do you think it's worth? I only paid $15.

Re: New Gruen in the mix!

The case back numbers recycled back to zero/nil essentially when 1000 was hit. That was in the 1950s as I recall on what has been published. Your's looks totally legit for a Gruen of the latest 1950s...maybe as late as the earliest of 1960s. However, when this watch came out, Gruen was a shell of it's former self. It is still a nice watch and is using a movement/date complication developed in the later-days of the original company. If you like working on watches (read: self COA), these later Gruen movements are fun to work on.
All that I know is based on the hard work and writing of others. I can only aspire to augment this body of knowledge. If I am wrong it is because of my own failings. To quote Newton, "If I have seen farther it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
