The Waltham Electrodyne Swissonic is based on the ESA 9150. It has a balance wheel and hairspring like normal mechanicals but no mainspring. Instead it incorporates the balance wheel as a component in a battery powered motor.

This is pre-quartz technology that addressed the need to avoid having to wear or wind a watch every day but still have it keep time. They are basically mechanical watches when it come to accuracy. Electronically controlled balance motors died out when quartz provided the same advantage with over 10X the accuracy (and a lower manufacturing cost).

Movement pics would help with some of the rest.

"The watch has to be surrounded by a history.
You need more than just a great design. You need to create an atmosphere around the product.
Who is the company behind it? Why are they using this material?
People need to be able to identify the watch with themselves. It's based on emotion." - Ralph Furter

...that's just my opinion and I've been wrong before and will be again and might be now!
