    Nivada Electronic Antarctic watch

I got this at the local market today. It's a Nivada Electronic Antarctic, with a ESA 9150 movement. As far as I can understand due to the movement, the waterproof on the back and the serial this could be from 1968...anyone agree? It's rather large and takes a 20mm strap which I need to get. The seller was quite insistent in it being an automatic, but he couldn't get it to work..

1968 would be in the range for watches with this electronically controlled balance wheel movement. These ESA movements were quite popular and used by a number of vendors. Hamilton even gave up on their own electric movements to vend similar ESA movements.

"The watch has to be surrounded by a history.
You need more than just a great design. You need to create an atmosphere around the product.
Who is the company behind it? Why are they using this material?
People need to be able to identify the watch with themselves. It's based on emotion." - Ralph Furter

...that's just my opinion and I've been wrong before and will be again and might be now!

Thanks for that. I'm a little suprised to see these movements in the sixties. I thought it was only Citizen Cosmotrons.

The "electronic" technology (as opposed to quartz) was invented by Hamilton as early as 1957 (Cal. 500).

    Re: Nivada Electronic Antarctic watch

My father gave me a Nivada Antartic automatic watch for my 21st birthday in 1971 . It was very similar to this one, but the form of the watch was slightly more curved . I really loved that watch and it worked well for many years . The automatic movement seemed to me to be state of the art at the time ! I still have it and will send you a pic when I locate it. I was always curious about the fact that they named this model 'Antartic' with a penguin on the back .
    I enjoyed remembering this watch
    cheers

Nivada provided watches and some financial support for an Antartic expedition. The Antartic models have some collector intrest.
