Non branded watch - help identify

    Hello everybody,

I have just stumbled across a watch on an auction site which has no markings on the case or dial, save for the number "446" on the caseback. It is being advertised as "swiss made". Below are the seller's pictures:

    1) Have you seen any other similar watches?
    2) Can this be a franken? (I'm inclined to think so, but I like the design, so that would not be a big deal)
    3) What kind of mechanism does it have?
It is being advertised as having a problem (the watch runs, but it cannot be set). Would it be pricey to have the movement fixed?

Thank you very much in advance!

It looks to be a AS 2163 movement and as it doesn't have any brand name on the rotor it's from one of the lesser brands.

    Hi Shum,

Thank you for your input, but isn't the AS2163 a 17 jewels movement?

Only if it was sold in the US. This one has 21 jewel but you can find it with 25.

Here is a video on servicing a AS 1900 movement and they are very similar once the rotor assembly is removed.

The number of jewels on a watch is subject to the whim of the maker, to a large degree.

The reason this movement often has problems with setting the time is that there is no cannon pinion and instead there is a friction wheel directly on the arbor of the second wheel and when the grease or oil dries up it sticks and then the clutch wheel will slip on the winding pinion and damaging the clutch wheel teeth.

Looks to me like no-name brand XYZ that had its dial trashed and was resurrected by just lacquering the dial in black (leaving the hour markers free, of course) without adding writing or minuterie. In other words: it didn't leave the shop like that, the brand was relatively unimportant (otherwise some name would be on the rotor) and since it is not pretending to be anything (except a sort of incomplete redial), I wouldn't go as far as calling it a franken.....

As for the movement, it need not be a Cal. 2163 - there were various versions of that movement, differing with respect to beat rate, hack feature (Y/N) and date quick setting (Y/N). Ranfft gives an overview in the entry for the 2163:
