Not Sure how old this is

I inherited this watch from my grandfather. Can some one tell me if it would be worth getting it fixed or restored? The watch does not run

Re: Not Sure how old this is

It is your Grandfather's watch. The answer is almost always "yes". It is a link to your ancestry...

Now, that said, if you are restoring this with the intent of raising its appraised value, you might be able to get an appraisal that equaled the repair cost.

But a lot of watches just need a cleaning to get working again. That isn't too bad. The Grandfather's watch deserves that!
"Forever is composed of nows." - Emily Dickinson

"The watch has to be surrounded by a history.
You need more than just a great design. You need to create an atmosphere around the product.
Who is the company behind it? Why are they using this material?
People need to be able to identify the watch with themselves. It's based on emotion." - Ralph Furter

...that's just my opinion and I've been wrong before and will be again and might be now!

Both French and German markings on the balance cock. Someone here will recognize the movement, it could be from around 1900. The case is marked Argentan so an alloy of copper and nickel ++, something like Silveroid.

Swiss watches from the late 19th/early 20th century can be difficult to identify beyond a basic region, unless there's some sort of marking under the balance or the dial. If the dial is enamel, there's not a lot you can do with that big chip other then stablize it so that it doesn't degrade further. It looks like a 15 jewel watch, which is decent quality that should run and keep time fairly well though. Before marketing (and synthetic jewels) started forcing the count up, 15 was considered fully jeweled.

Assuming that was on the case, then no it doesn't really. Cases were typically built by different companies then the watch, and serial numbers from them are mostly useless these days.

My son's girlfriend's father collects clocks he has a friend who collects and repairs clocks and watches, so I'll have him look at. I'm hoping to find another non working Argenten with a similar but better looking face, then I can hopefully come up with a fully restored watch.

Find someone worthy of the job. Do not just take it to a friend of your son's, girlfriend's father.

Find a guy who knows what it is, when and how it was made and how to properly restore it.

I'd get it restored without getting rid of the patina, the charachter it's earned.

Then never sell it. Pass it down to your son.
Looking for a Benarus Megladon 500m. Also the Benarus Megladon 4 Titanium.
PM me if you've got one for sale.

    But that's just me.
