Old pocket watch, what do I have here?

    Hello,

I have had this old pocket watch around for a long time and I don't really know anything about it. Here are some pictures. Can someone tell me what I have here, and what Cylinre means?

    Thanks!

Just pasting those links doesn't work for me.

To post your pictures as attachments from your hard drive:

Go to advanced reply, then below your message you have a section under additional options of "Attach files". There is a button there labelled "Manage Attachments", where you can then search on your local drive and a thumbnail of the picture is then attached to your post.

You then tell the system to upload the pictures before you leave the seperate window that opens up.

Large files may have to be resized to more modest proportions.

Those links only work for people on your local network.

The files have to be reasonably small - I think that each one is only allowed to be 190K at the most. Make them smaller and they should upload.

As for "Cylindre", this means that the watch has a cylindre escapement and is probably from the 19th or very early 20th century. A little bit mundane - but better than a Roskopf (pin lever) watch. If a cylindre escapement watch runs, you can have it serviced reasonably easily - but if it doesn't, you'll have a hell of a task getting it up and going again!

Difficult to put a precise age on it (especially without a picture of the works) but looks like it's definitely 19th century, probably pre-1880.

Dear Standfast, (your name: beceause of the famous sailing yachts???, I am always looking over the old wharfs of Standfast Breskens, as it is on the other side of the road/Dyke from where I live in Breskens)
    about the watch:
one of the first generation of "floating barrels" around 1870/80! and then more towards 1870....
should have very very fine leave shaped hands.
    French/Swiss made.
    about echappement cylindre:

    Rmelle,

So my watch is probably a Swiss movement cased in France? How I wish I knew French!

My user name is related to the famous English/Scottish adventure novel, The 39 Steps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thirty-Nine_Steps There is another book in the series called Mr. Standfast, from which I chose my name. I do have lots of Dutch friends though!
