Skeleton watches have been with us since the dawn out watchmaking. Though maybe not what you're thinking of, in the 1500s, "Momento Mori" watches in the shape of skulls were popular, and cases made out of crystal to show mechanism date from that time too.

The premier book on this is Baillie's "Watches, their history Decoration and Mechanisms".

This sounds fantastic! I wish I had this book. Are there many illustrations in it? Thanks.
