Cool Opinions on this 1680 Red Sub?

    Hello gents,

Currently helping someone move a bit of his collection and in an effort to ascertain honest value (I'm not asking for a valuation here) I want to ask what do you guys think of the watch condition-wise. Things I already know are: it's pretty polished, the bracelet is a 93150 with a P1 date code while it should be a 9315 folded style and the 2.7m serial pushes it into '71 and '72 territory. But other than that it looks to be a correct MKIV Red Sub Dial with MK3 fat font insert which is correct for the serial range. The owner has replaced the hands as they were originally SL service hands. The crystal appears to be a correct top-hat style. Do you guys see anything else I should mention? I was seriously considering buying it myself but my mind has wandered over to tritium EXP2 land as a much cheaper but still cool vintage alternative.

I agree with your comments except that the crystal is not correct. If you look at other examples you will see that the magnifier should be correctly centered over the date window. Also, you will want to check the case-back to make sure the date matches the serial. Sometimes these get replaced.

[Edit: Actually, I want to retract my comment about the crystal. After looking more closely at the photos, I think my comment was probably just due to parallax error from the angle that different photos were taken.]

Thanks, for the input Dan! I just wanted to make sure I hit on all the possible points. Would you say the polishing is egregious? I received some nasty feedback about that bit from another watch forum.

It is pretty severe; the chamfers/bevels on the lugs are basically gone. It's definitely an issue, but there are people out there who can refinish these cases extremely well. If the dial is messed up, on the other hand, not much can be done, so this watch is still valuable on the basis of the nice condition of the dial and the significant amount of remaining originality.
