    ORIS Pocket Watch and chain

Hello everyone, I have just joined this site in a last attempt to get some HONEST advice!!!
I was left an Oris pocket watch and watch chain by my uncle a few years ago when he passed away.
For the past few days I have been trawling round all the local jewellers and pawnbrokers to get a valuation of these items.
All only seem to be interested in the chain, (and offer less than scrap value!), and all have said the watch is worthless (which tbh, I also thought)....except one!
This one person did give a valuation for the chain,(much higher than the others) but stated he didn't want to buy it. He then asked to see the watch.
After few minutes, he told me not to take the advice of the previous people as he knew the name ORIS was well respected. However, he was not an expert and suggested I do a bit of research.
The watch is in excellent condition and perfect working order (as you will see from my photographs)
He did manage to tell me that the watch was probably c. 1950 and was gold plated.
The rear case on my watch looks like it is only meant to be removed by a specialist, so I haven't attempted to look at the movement.
Is this watch worth something, and have the local pawnbrokers been trying to take advantage?
Any advice you can give will be much appreciated as I plan to sell the watch and chain and give to my aunt.
Sorry the pics are upside down!!!

It's hard to say very much without seeing photos of the inside of the case-back and the movement of the watch. The hinged case-back is straightforward to open. My guess is that the pawnbrokers are not far off. Assuming the case is gold-plated and not solid gold, the value of the watch, while not zero, is only nominal. It's not very old or truly collectible. However, it's in good condition, and if it's running, someone will buy it and enjoy using it. You could sell the chain for scrap and put the watch on eBay for a small additional profit. On the other hand, if the watch case is solid gold, then it has significant scrap value.

To resolve the content issue you should have a good watch repair shop remove the back. The inside will indicate whether it is gold, gold filled, plated, etc. How is the chain marked for gold content.

Yes it looks like an early 1950's pocket watch in good cosmetic condition. The dial looks excellent.

Thanks for that, i found a link to an auction for a watch that looks exactly like the one I have, including the design on the back, but i cant post a link here unfortunately.
The chain is marked 9 karat, c. 1920

The watch and chain were bought together for my uncle by his father, my grandfather, from a jewellers called Gerry & C0 Ltd in Newton Abbot, I still have the box!

Be sure to keep the box and any documentation like warranty and sales receipt together. It should help when selling the watch on Ebay.

It is in such nice cosmetic condition and it has shock protection not seen on most pocket watches. Have you considered keeping it as an heirloom and possibly using it on occasion?

Since the chain is only 9k (0.375 gold), I'm guessing that perhaps the scrap value is not so high. And since you have the box and perhaps other documentation, this could be a case where it might be worth keeping it all together. It would certainly make a nice gift, and a pocket watch needs a chain.

You should keep the watch unless you are starving to death and need money for food or something because what you get for it will not exceed the value it has as a heirloom.

To be honest you won't realize enough to help your budget much at all. Consider keeping it if at all possible.
