The other other watch that arrived yesterday... Universal Geneve

Thought this deserved its own thread...

The 3rd watch that arrived in my recent job lot, along with the Borgel IWC and Ladies Stauffer watch was this interesting little number...

The pics are post a quick clean...

I honestly had no idea what the watch was going to be when purchasing it. However, the case back intrigued me!

It was not easy to unscrew the case... (hence the clean) as the rubber gasket had turned to glue! But with the back off, I could see the make... Universal Geneve!! Made from 'Enversteel'

Knowing this, the case serial number seems to date the watch to C1939/40

The inner cuvette was hiding the movement within

And, with that off... the beautiful 260 cal movement is looking in great shape.

I have lightly cleaned the dial, as it was dirty.. the hand placement in the listing hiding the worse of it!! That said, its looking ok... the numbers are faded. May consider getting the dial and hands relumed with a 'toast' colour... may help give some definition.

few more pics of the movement (inc bottom plate)

Love the fact the bottom plate has been finished to such high standard (more so than top?)

As for the movement or case design..... if anyone has any facts/info... happy to hear it.

That movement is in lovely condition. Pretty early for an Incabloc I would think (I know they came out in the 30s but...). Do you think those hands are the original style? Anyway - nice catch.

    Hi Paleotime,

The dating of the watch is around 1939/40... from the serial number. I agree the inclusion of Incabloc would be early indeed... IIRC it was introduced in 1936? I guess someone had to be using it....

As for the hands. I honestly dont know. The watch has a military style to it, with these type of hands used during this period! Im not saying they are original (as I dont know), but I dont have any reason to doubt they are.

The dial itself may have been refinished... but I think more likely that and branding (UG) has come off...

Its similar in style to this Wittnauer (hands and style of dial with light outline to the numbers)

Happy for others to give their thoughts.

(Edit - obviously did not remember correctly - thanks Adam)

Hi - I realized the dating was secure. It was just one of those things I notice. When I am looking at buying I watch and I see the Incabloc I always think to myself post-WWII - but that is really not the case. Good to see one earlier - try to train my mind not to jump to conclusions...

Thanks Horologist007 for the patent date - so much to learn and know in this hobby/passion.

Indeed...I asked because I thought that they clashed a little (color wise more than style) with the second hand. But that could be my monitor as easily as anything else.

I checked out you other post - it seems like you were 3 for 3 with really nice scores in that lot of watches.

Very clean movement a shame about the dial fade, but agree toast (as you said) lume would make it look good again.

Thanks PT, all in all, the lot was not bad at all.

As for the UG... I would agree, if the hands are original, Its likely thats not the original lume. But as I have not seen another like this, I dont really have anything to go on...

    Thanks Joe,

I think the case design (with tight fitting inner cuvette) has helped keep the movement tidy... but not the dial. That said, its not uncommon to see this type of metal painted dial, which would have been lumed, looking quite tired and faded. I will consider what to do!

Good watch, interesting 'tropical' case, is it a two piece case?
Nice one, you did well with this lot.

    Thanks Radger,

As I would have paid more for the IWC borgel on its own.... the other 2 watches are bonuses. And for them both to be of a qood/high quality, I cant complain.

The case is indeed 2-part. The crystal has been replaced and needs replacing again!

Seen a case like this before??
