    Pirofa

Some time ago a got hold of a Pirofa made by Pierre & Robert Fontaine in Nantes, who were in business there during the 1950's and 1960's. They are the second maker I've come across in Nantes, the other being Arvor. The Fontaine's seem to have closed down by 1970, and the brand, along with Arvor, is now registered to Michel Epenoy SARL, founded in 1972 at rue Victor Hugo, Besanēcon, and it's manager Cedric Epenoy, who also has a small watch business at the same address.

This one is from the mid to late 1950's, with an ETA 2391 series 17 jewel movement:

Today my second Pirofa arrived from Barcelona, this time from the 1960's, with the ubiquitous 15 jewel Cupillard 233-60.

    Thanks Chris

Because the second is only 32mm the seller advertised it as a ladies watch, not realising just how much smaller watches were back then, so I was the only bidder, much to my surprise, another bargain

You'll be sharing my reputation as a skinflint soon.

Nice pickup - yet another nice brand I don't have.

I've had that reputation for many years now, from the days when I collected guitars, empty bottles of red wine and headaches

Unfortunately there are far too many nice but unknown brands, or do I mean fortunately, as they're the affordable ones, but they're a constant source of temptation, and I'm all too frequently tempted. It's a good job we're in different countries otherwise we'd be driving the prices up!
