Confused Please explain why some vintage watches have no jewels

    Funny question.

I have some no-jewel Timex watches in my collection from NOS. They have never been used and if they will stay in a collection as they are, they can be worn on judgement day (leaving aside dried in oils).

And there are these heavily jewelled luxury watches worn day in, day out and need a regular service, let's say every five years.

Your answer is somewhere in between.

But more seriously: I have a pocket watch from my grandfather which he carried to work in the 1950s. No jewels, pin lever escapement. It runs well when I wind it up once or twice a year. 'Able to last' also means what you expect from the performance in view of precision. I have several verge fusee pocket watches from the mid of the 18th century running without any problem without a drop of oil, but I don't want to catch a plane with such a timepiece as a reference.

Why no jewels? Simple.. they are cheaper. Most of your cheaper watches have less jewels. Like said earlier, how long they last will depend on how much they were worn and how much they were taken care of when they were worn. I've seen new bushings put in watches with no jewels, so they can also be repaired if someone wants to go through the trouble.

Don't hear about it anymore, it was an event when you got your first 'jeweled watch'.
