Possible WWII POW Waltham help please

I have my grandfathers old Waltham and I know nothing about it. He was a POW in Germany after surviving the Battle of the Bulge. I have no way of identifying this watch other than I know he wore it before I was born (1969) and I know it's old but is it old enough to have been his watch while in service? I can't ask him as he passed on 20 years ago and no one else would now.

Either way, I'd like any info I can get and would really be interested in either using it to learn simple watch servicing myself or at the very least have it serviced. It runs, but obviously I am hesitant to run it as the innards are without doubt dry as a bone or gummed up. It even seems to keep time!

Anyway, thanks in advance for the help.

Nope, not old enough. 1960s, it would appear, given that it's Swiss made. That said, it's not much older than you.

Yeah, that one was definitely purchased at least a decade and a half after your grandfather returned from the war. I'd recommend taking it to a watchmaker to have it serviced, and save your nascent skills for a watch that isn't as sentimentally valuable to you and your family. You don't want to mess with the "innards" on that guy!

OK, well I admit I was pretty doubtful.

Neat watch anyway, and yeah, I'd like it serviced.

Can anyone recommend a mail in service? The only shop in my area is notorious for overcharging.

How much has your local shop quoted you to service this watch?

I haven't even stopped by there in years. I was charged over $30 for a battery replacement once and never went back.

Yikes! That IS steep for a three-dollar battery.
