PUW, Pallas, Parat, Arctos (some answers)

    “My Pforzheim Quartett”

As promised some days ago here´s a pic of my famous vintage Pforzheim Four

It all began with my green Stowa Seatime....

which I got from the bay. Further examination lead to the identification of the movement: PUW 1561.

    The Pallas.......

    .....with a handwinding PUW 561....

....came next. Fetched this one on the bay too for very less money (25,--Euro) in absolutely mint condition.

Next came the black dialed Stowa which I discovered in a small watchmakers shop at Bonn-Bad Godesberg. After a complete overhaul it was mine for 60 Euro......

....the engine is a hw PUW 561 too.

Latest addition to the Pforzheim collection was the Arctos which I got from the bay last week......

My 2nd PUW 1561 powered watch.

    Some historical facts:

    Pallas

Once upon a time there have been a lot of watch manufacturers in the Pforzheim area known as Stowa (Walter Storz), PaRa (Paul Raff), Arctos, Hugo Weinmann (brand: Exquisit), Ormo and others.
In 1970 most of them joined the Pallas Deutsche Uhren-Kooperation (Pallas German Watch Cooperation).
Paul Raff was one of the men who founded Pallas. Somehow a new marketing strategy in 1970 by using synergetic effects - that´s what it is called nowadays. (So it is quite possible to fetch a Stowa Pallas or Pallas Stowa or just a Pallas on ebay or elsewhere).

    Parat
The Parat slogan (rime) was: "Immer pünktlich, früh und spat, mit der Armbanduhr Parat." (a translation would be: Always on time, early (in the morning) or late (in the evening) with a Parat wrist watch).

Already in 1949 (after WW II) a "Deutsche Uhrenkooperation" (German Watch Cooperation) was founded by Philipp Weber under the brandname PARAT.
There isn´t much to read about the Parat Cooperation but from what I could find out the Arctos Uhrenfabrik Philipp Weber, Berg Uhrenfabrik, Wilhelm Beutter, Osco Uhrenfabrik, Otto Schlund (brand was currently re-launched) and Stowa joined this co-op.
When wholesalers got into economical troubles and decided to sell the PARAT-collection to greater department stores the cooperation lost a lot of money and disappeared from the market.

    PUW

PUW stands for Pforzheimer Uhrenwerke (Pforzheim Watch Movements or Pforzheim Ebauches).
PUW movements have been very popular in from the 60ties to the 70ties and I think they are worth to be colected (just as a witness of time).

    Arctos

The "Arctos Uhrenfabrik" was founded in Pforzheim in 1923 by Philipp Weber (1890 - 1962) and Jakob Aeschbach and first was named Weber & Aeschbach. In 1928 already 260 movements (pocket and wrist watches) have been produced per day. After WW II the brand´s name changed into Arctos Uhrenfabrik Philipp Weber.
The Parat slogan (rime) was: "Immer pünktlich, früh und spat, mit der Armbanduhr Parat." (a translation would be: Always on time, early (in the morning) or late (in the evening) with a Parat wrist watch).
Later Arctos was known as an official suplier to the "Bundeswehr".
The re-launched "Arctos" of our days is quite different to the "Arctos" of those days and –afaik- isn´t made in Pforzheim any more.

    Stowa

If there should be a reader outside not knowing what Stowa is about, feel free to read their history on www.stowa.com .

    Hope you enjoyed reading.

Thanks to Christoph Lorenz for his PUW pics.

Re: PUW, Pallas, Parat, Arctos (some answers)

    Hello Mike,

    nice PUWs.

    Let me add mine:

    A Stowa Seatime (no-date) with a 1360 (25J):

Hope I will find once this model in the condition of the one you showed (but has to be the no-date).

Another Stowa with the 1360 (25J):

Have to shoot a better pic (allthough it's very hard to capture this dial)

    A Berger with a 1661S (25J):

    almost NOS

    A Zentra Safari with a 1561 (?J, without quickset)

And an Anker with a 1561 (25J, date-quickset by pushing the crown:

I love to wear that one to Jeans.

I have to admit that I prefer their (the PUW's) winding noise of the auto much compared to that one of the ETAs.

    Cheers,

    Axel

Nice watches! I picked up an almost identical ZentRa Safari from eBay with a brownish stripey dial. Also has a PUW 1561 - but the movement turned out to be trashy: water had seeped in through the crown aperture and rust had spread a little over the dial side, ruining the keyless works. So, looking for a trashy watch with a perfect PUW 1561 now...

    Hello Hartmut,

talking about the Safari, that's what I found in 1974 Watch and Jewlery mag:

Good luck , for your hunt Hartmut, but it shouldn't take you too long to find something for around 20 - 25 EUR in the bay. You might have to contact some sellers to verify the movement, though.

    Gruß,

    Axel

I always check ebay.de for old ebauches. Last week there was a complete PUW 1561 offered, this week it is a 1661S (19,90 Euro). So ebay.de should be worth a visit from time to time.

Thanks for the tip! I've only just settled into our new house with internet connection, so I haven't been to the Bay for a while. Looks like I ought to!

Some time ago I also got very similar Stowa as this.

    But some differences also.

On dial word "automatic" is over the "25 Rubis"
Also hour and minute hands are a little different but looks original.

Bezel is a little different. 12 o´clock is painted triangle no dot. Indexes are lines not dots. Looks original bezel but "too good" to be about 40 years old.

Very nice condition PUW 1360 movement and seems to be that some markings are (already originally) milled out from rotor. Caravelle -markings maybe?

    Case back is marked:

    ALL STAINLESS-STEEL-ANTIMAGNETIC
    100 % WATER PROOF TESTED
    20 ATMOSPHERES

    Non screw down crown.

Nice watch, currently there´s a hype on ebay.de. These Seatimers sell for 250 Euro and more.
