Query: Repairing/refurbishing Breitling Top Time ref 2009 circa 1965/6

I have a Breitling Top Time that dates from either 1965 or 1966. I think it is the Breitling TOP TIME gold ref 2009 cal Valjoux 7730 Diameter 36mm from 1966.

The watch belonged to my father.

It is unfortunately not in working order and I would like to have it repaired and possibly refurbished if possible.

I am currently living in Hanoi, Vietnam and thus contacted the main distributor for Breitling in SE Asia in Singapore to inquire whether the registered service centre in Hanoi at "Galle Watch" would be able to do this.I bought my Orient from them and they have serviced that watch, but this Breitling is more than 50 years old and a family heirloom - not sure I want to trust them with that.

The person I spoke to in Singapore informed me that because it's a vintage watch, it would need to be sent back to the main repair centre in Grenchen, Switzerland.

Has anyone got any experience with this or have any other suggestions on what I could do to get the watch repaired? I don't trust the shipping companies and postal services in Vietnam as things have a tendency to go missing.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

repair charges in Grenchen will be a multiple of market value, repairs will take a year or more - and restoration work is often sub par.
can you be so kind to tell us more what issues the watch has and what "refurbishment" the watch needs, then I can suggest where to send it?
    pictures please!

    Hi Watchfred

    Thanks for the reply.

Currently the watch is not in working order. My dad kept it in a safe the past twenty years. The crown seems to be stuck which means the watch cant be wound. The spring bars are missing and it will need a new strap/band. There also seems to be some rust on the casing, the dial is cracked and discoloured (which I don't mind) and the crystal is scratched. (sorry if I'm using incorrect terminology, I am new to this)

I basically want to get it back to working order, perhaps do a little clean-up and just bring it back to some of it's former glory so that I can wear it. Ever since I was boy, I have loved this watch and it's probably the reason I am into watches today.

Hopefully someone can suggest a reliable watchmaker in Hong Kong or Singapore. I would definitely avoid a local watchmaker for this cherished heirloom. Over the 20+ years I have lived in Vietnam, I have heard some frightening watch repair stories and have had one of my own. My ex-girlfriend's father is a vintage Rolex specialist and a great guy but I wouldn't trust him with an important watch. I have had good luck with TNT and DHL shipments in and out of Vietnam but understand your concern. If I recall correctly, one member here had a trusted watchmaker in Bangkok. If he chimes in, you could contact the BKK watchmaker in advance and take a cheap Air Asia flight to deliver the watch in person and maybe another trip to pick it up. Just a thought. Good luck!

I would suggest to find a local watchmaker in Hanoi, I'll ask some collector friends for a suggestion and get back to you - the Valjoux 7730 was widely used and, if needed, spare parts are relatively easily available - strap & springbars are no problem whatsoever, but please tell the watchmaker to leave the dial alone, nothing can realistically be done to "refurbish" this, without destroying it.

Thanks again for the great advice - I will keep searching for someone in Hanoi that could potentially work on it. Any suggestions about someone reliable to take it to would be a great help.

I am very wary of having it serviced by anyone that doesn’t have sound credentials and and references. From my experience in the 5 years I have lived in Hanoi, even the “best people” here don’t always do what one asks. Like the time I went to a high-end bespoke tailor for my wedding suit and when I returned for the fitting they had used completely the wrong coulour material. Thus an instruction to leave the dial alone might actually just end up in that person trying to work on it and destroying it.

I am also not 100% sure that the movement is Valjoux; apparently some of these models also used a Venus movement?

this is an early dial for a 2009, so movement can either be a Venus 188 or a Valjoux 7730 - both are the same movement, jjst a new name applied to it when Valjoux took over Venus SA in 1967

spoke to some collector friends from Vietnam, they know of no watchmaker in Hanoi, but suggest to contact Mr. Quach Cao in Saigon ??ng h? A Cao

    Thanks a lot WatchFred.

Would also be willing to travel elsewhere in SE Asia if anyone has any recommendations.

Just an update for those interested.

Before posting here, I did send an email to Breitling’s customer service and I finally received an answer. It was exactly as WatchFred said to begin with: 10 to 12 months period for the repairs and a price tag starting off at “probably more than 1500CHF”.

On the positive side, I did find someone who came highly recommended here on the forum, who lives in Thailand and is willing to work on the watch and I will drop it off with him as soon as my job allows me to make the quick hop to Bangkok. He said a week tops and at a fraction of the cost.

The next question I now have is what kind of strap I should get with the watch? I prefer leather and originally the watch had a black leather strap. I tend to lean more to brown leather though and was thinking a dark brown with a gold clasp (though it might be hard to find something that matches the watch). Something like in the picture perhaps? (not mine - from google) As my dad was quite rugged and wore this while hunting and working outside etc, I thought the strap should also reflect it? Would greatly appreciate other opinions.

For that particular watch, I would stick with a black strap.
