Questions about a diver watch: a Jean Richard Aquastar

    Hi,
A seller offered me that Jean Richard Aquastar and after some research I would like to know what is your opinion about:
    1) Are the hands original? It looks like the seconds hand it's not the correct one
    2) The bezel doesn't rotate at all. Do you know why, it could be brocken? The seller told me that some of them couldn't be rotated
    3) The case looks lika it has been polished. A polished case decreases really a lot the value of the watch?
    4) Do you think the rubber strap is the original one?
Thank you, in advance, for your valuable help......

The hands are wrong, see photo below of the correct hands. Also note that the lume color on hands and dial does not match.

I have never heard of a dive watch with a fixed bezel, that makes no sense. It must be broken.

The case doesn't look too bad to me. It has been polished, but I don't think that the shape is degraded too badly, and the text on the back is very sharp.

The strap looks like a generic modern inexpensive "Tropic-style" strap, not the original or a genuine vintage Tropic strap.

Re: Questions about a diver watch: a Jean Richard Aquastar

    Hello Gicar ;
I happen to own one of these so might be able to help a bit.

    1. Hands look incorrect and too fat. They have been re lumed without any sympathy to the original lume plots.
The seconds hand should feature a lollipop blob on it's tip. Some say this watch was the first to use a lollipop and the model is well known for it.
    2. Bezel. In 1957 JeanRichard applied for a patent for their unique bi directional bezel. This was granted. I don't believe they ever made a patent application for
a bezel that was stuck ? . Of course the bezel should rotate both ways.
    3. Nothing wrong with polishing a case by hand with something like a Cape Cod cloth to remove 50 years of grime, dirt and sticky muck. The problem is polishing
with a machine that can change the strength and detail of the original case and rub off identification marks.
    4. The crown should read 'Aquastar' not an inscription of a star. That crown looks like it's from a later Aquastar model.
I would date the watch that you posted to circa 1962 with the 1701 Schild movement ( similar to some Blancpain 50 fathom models ).
I assume that you know this watch is the JeanRichard Aquastar 60 and famous for being the Mariana Trench watch ?
Here's my own watch which features 'skeleton ' hands. I personally prefer these to mis matched new lume.

    Hope that helps.

    Hello Kazrich,
thanks very much for your answer it helps a lot!!!!!
I knew about the story of Don Walsh: He wore a JeanRichard Aquastar 60, not a Rolex, during the deep diving into the Mariana's trench on January 1960.
I prefer as well non relumed hands and of course the original ones.
    Best,
    Gicar
