    Real men wear pink...

    ... and black!

Put on your Qiana shirts and platform shoes and let's take a trip back to the 1970's.

This one's for JohnF, the Gruen fan. Although rather than a Gruen movement, this one has the famous Buren-Leonidas-Heuer cal. 12 on board. I guess it's time to apply for membership in the "Poor Man's Heuer" club.

I almost want to break out the old "Saturday Night Fever" album. On 8-Track!

    Take care,

    Hi -

    Thanks for that one.

I've actually researched that watch to see if I want to get one. I've found them going for between $400-$600 for something like the one you show, and that's not unreasonable for something like that.

Alas, as you point out, it's not a Gruen movement. The watch dates from that sad time period in Gruen's history when the company was no longer in Ohio, but had moved to New York and had abandoned its Swiss manufacturing and moved to being, basically, one of the early OEMs.

Not that they're bad watches: they're not. But they ain't the real classic Gruens. But the classic Gruens were never chronographs: even their classic one-button doctor's chronograph were bases on an outsourced movement. That started in the early 1960s, as the company reorganized after the first management buyout; their alarm watch was also an outsourced movement. I'm not completely sure, but I think that the last Gruen movements, designed in-house and made in Switzerland, were their bumper automatics.

But thanks for the photos, and for thinking of my small obsession.

I just picked up a 70s Gruen largely to round out the collection (automatic, central seconds, pillow case) that I'll have to get a picture of RSN.

Thanks for the comments, JohnF -

For me, the connection was more with being the "Poor Man's Heuer" and the microrotor design. This particular one was a Gruen, so I thought of you and this forum. I paid about 20% of what a Heuer or Breitling with the same movement goes for. At that level ,it was pretty much a no-brainer deal.

Just so long as it works. With chrono function on overnight, it was only off about 3 seconds, not too bad.

I know of an identical watch for sale at an online shop at your mentioned price range. Just PM me and I can e-mail you the link.

    Thanks again,

Pink you say? You need to have one of these rose gold Bulovas in your watch box then.

    Hi -

Thanks for the offer, but I just placed orders for two Yao modified diver's watches and my budget is waaaay shot. But thanks for thinking of me! There aren't that many people out there collecting Gruens (thankfully, otherwise I couldn't have afforded the ones I have...).

Well, it's more like the flourescent "day-glo" pink-orange from the old 1970's posters.

You want pink gold, I'll give you some pink gold...

The Omega looks like regular yellow gold to me. Must be my monitor I guess.
