Recommend me a vintage American-made gold wristwatch

I'm looking for something that is a good reflection of American watchmaking pre-1965, not too difficult to repair if necessary, respectable movement, not too small (but I'm flexible regarding case shape). Budget max around $1100 if solid gold case, obviously less for gold fill. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

I've been happy with my 1949 Bulova President. Its 7AK movement is fully jeweled and keeps decent time with a 40+ hour power reserve. 10kt gold-filled case has just a few hints of wear through on the corners. Got it for less than the cost of taking a date out to the movies and spent about $100 on a service.

Only downsides are the 14mm strap is hard to find and it's not water-resistant.

I would at least look at Hamilton. Many high quality solid gold all American watches in many styles. At that budget you can get one in mint condition and have it serviced and have plenty of change left. Go to eBay and ask for vintage Hamilton solid gold.

Bulova, Elgin, Hamilton and Illinois can be found in gold or gold filled cases

Rarer designs will cost more, but should be able to find 10K - 18K models for well under your budget

    Have you considered pocket watches?

If you wanted an top-notch example of pre-1965 American watchmaking, a railroad-grade Hamilton would be a prime specimen.

Try a Hamilton Thin-O-Matic with the micro rotor. (I think it was some of the 600 series movements.)

American Made high horology. Some plate in gold, some in solid gold. Hunt around a bit there are a LOT of good examples out there.

Recommend me a vintage American-made gold wristwatch

I like my Elgin Deluxe (photo is from somewhere else) but Hamiltons are probably a bit nicer. Also a lot of those gold square watches are quite small so I’d filter out the tiny ones. Vintage shops in Chicago have piles of Elgins like this but most are too small and in varying degrees of disrepair.

The Hamilton Parker B is a nice watch. Round, good size, fantastic 770 movement. A lot of folks see the Hamilton 770 as the peak of American watchmaking. Even an Elgin guy like me lusts after them.

Didn't Hamilton acquire the Swiss based Buren to get the mico-rotor?
I've got more Converse sneakers than watches, but it is a close race.
