Question Recommendations requested for a vintage dress watch please........

I not familiar with many vintage watch brands and so I wanted to seek out the opinions of those who are familiar.

I am looking for an everyday classic mechanical dress watch in the lines of a vintage Patek and Vacheron in looks. I would love to just buy a vintage patek or vacheron but it is out of my price range. My price range is $400ish because I'll probably have to pay for a movement service and case polish upon receiving the watch.

I have been looking around and it seems that a solid gold case is not in the ballpark. I would love either a stainless steel or a gold filled watch perhaps? I want the watch to be 34mm to 38mm in diameter with a reliable mechanical movement. I am only familiar with the name brand vintage watches so I was looking at JLC or Longines. Any other brands I should give a look at like Universal Geneve?

    Just to reiterate:

    - classic dress watch with either stick or numeric markers
    - diameter of between 34mm to 38mm
    - stainless steel or gold filled
    - reliable mechanical movement for everyday use
    - in the $400 ish range

I am open to people's suggestions as to a dress watch. My list of criteria are pretty loose with the exception of the price range and the classic look.

Thank you for your help in my search.

    Take care.

$400 still sounds like a lot of money to me so you should be able to get something pretty nice for that price. Sooooo, I'll start...

    How about a nice Eterna:

I vote stainless steel Omega Seamaster 1950's with big beefy lugs and a black alligator strap with black dial.

My choice if it has to be round is a glass back interesting movement one to show autowind microtor as in the best Pateks. S.s. so cheap, but fine Polerouter. Universal Geneve 1958.

Actual preference is Gruen or Hamilton long cases. Be distinctive. Round caases are boring; especially with Rolexes. Too many nice fakes. The Wall Streeters debasing our $ lately are favoring the best of the long case Gruens.
Many nice ones by Gruen 1937-50. Best Hamiltons fine 19j mvnt. are 1940s Gilmans 14k but normally without diamonds. Google HAMILTON WRIST WATCH GILMAN. DICKENS 1938-41 was lower cost similar Hamilton.

The criteria are well detailed. Find a less used one then this nicest round case for under $100 I have seen like this 1950+ Hamilton. I have a dozen like it. Fine reliable Swiss auto movement and a case very nicely finished thick gold fill with elegant dial. Looks like $10k not $100. I would not sell it for !00 but cost 20.

Thanks again for the pics. Helps tremendously.

Do you have a recommended vintage seller? I live in the States. Ebay seems like a mix of reputable to bad sellers.

Search ebay for Wakmann. Great old watches - quite high quality in their day.
They've not been copied so no worries about buying a fake. And most ran old Valjoux or Breitling movements - dependable and easily serviced.

I am not on my home computer,so no pics possible. I think the 70s Titoni Titoflex with the slight twist to the lugs is one of the most elegantly designed watches around. They are not paticularly expensive, but very well made watches none the less. Usually sold from China as that was where they were marketed primarily. And not to beat a dead horse, but for slim elegance the Luch 2209 and its varients are very fine looking and working watches. Check them out but be careful as the faking of new dials has begun. Good luck.
