    Spaulding Chicago Split Chronograph c.1900's

    Hello to all,

There is one of these in a decent 18k open case at a local pawn shop. The watch is signed on the dial and movement "Spaulding, Chicago" and "Swiss". From what I could tell they were a high end retailer around the early 20th century. I am going to try to get a pic of the movement to see if anyone can identify it. I'm pretty sure they did not make their own movements so I was curious if anyone knows what Swiss companies made movements for this and possibly other high end retailers? Any thoughts on value?

    Thanks

Spaulding & Co was a high end jeweler in Chicago and also with office in Paris. They did not use inhouse movements. Some information about the company founder here:

I know Longines made a lot of jobber watches for american retailers, and had some Chronograph variants in the early 1900's. I think complicated movements (repeaters, chronographs, etc) were one of the things that kept the Swiss in the watch industry in the late 19th century, because the market probably wasn't big enough for American style production to be interested in. Waltham made a number of 'em in the early years, but seemed to lose interest after a while. Not sure if Elgin ever got into that market.

Thanks for the help, I did find one on Ebay which looks very similar to the watch that I was curious about so I might assume the movement in mine is also Meylan.

Could be. However Spaulding used movements from other makers as well. In October 2009 the following item was listed among the top 40 ebay pocket watches auctions on Collectors Weekly:
    Patek Philippe & Co Geneva Spaulding Chronometer - 1901 - $1,525 (30 bids)

Was this a pawn shop in GSO that had the Spaulding & Co.? I was in there yesterday and saw the watch if it was. It's a beauty! As pretty as it was in the showcase....it looks three times as pretty at my house. CC

Congratulations! Have you researched the movement as to age and model yet?
