    Question Swiss Nivada watch?

    Hello together,

out of the inheritance of my grandpa, I got an old wristwatch. Now I'm thinking about restoring it, but there are some questions and problems...

? Is it possible to find out the age of the watch?
? Where could I get the needed spare parts?
? How to replace the glass?
? The crown shaft (sorry, I don't know the exact term) is broken at the crown base, the remaining shaft sticks steady in the movement. How to eliminate the gumming and disassemble the shaft?

    Thanks a lot!

I can’t offer much assistance, just wanted to say welcome! I hope you find a feasible way to restore the watch for sentimental purposes (anything can be done, for a price). Good luck.

    Re: Swiss Nivada watch?

Is it possible to find out the age of the watch? No, but guessing is possible. A typical fearure of wrist watches of the 50s, 60s is the stainless steel back, the cases at these times were brass, chrome or gold plated.

Where could I get the needed spare parts?
What spare parts ? A good and knowledgeable watchmaker should be able to produce parts not being available anymore. In your case I‘d buy another movement from ebay. Since Stuttgart seem to be your home town try Uhren-Roemer for spare parts or complete movements.

How to replace the glass? Your watchmaker knows how.

The crown shaft (sorry, I don't know the exact term) is broken at the crown base, the remaining shaft sticks steady in the movement. How to eliminate the gumming and disassemble the shaft? Your watchmaker should know this as well. Don‘t start DIY if you aren‘t experienced.

I would echo Mike. This watch needs a service during which the stem and crystal will be replaced as a matter of course.

Do not attempt to repair or even service a heirloom mechanical watch unless you are well past the initial learning stages of watchmaking.

    Hello together,

    being back after a while...
Shurely, bringing the watch to a watchmaker is the easiest way. But on this way I'll never get experience in watch mechanics. And I would like to repair it by myself.
So I hope I will get some informations, hints, and adresses for spare parts

Is Esslinger.com recommendable even for Europe / Germany?
