    Trick to opening pocket watch

I have my grandfathers pocket watch. the front and back both open. they both have hinges on the bottom and tabs to aide in opening. Neither will budge. Is there a tick to opening these things?

Probably before you are recommended to prying it open, you may want to post some pictures so we can see exactly what you are talking about and see if there is another step in the process.

It looks like it should just pop open but just to be sure, can you show a pic of the side where the tab is and maybe the hinge itself also?

There is no trick and everything is very plain and simply. Go underneath the place as shown by the arrow, between lid and case. There are special openers for this (case opener knifes and similar things). You can start to try with your thumbnail, if that is not working (most likely), take a short and sharp knife and carefully lever it open. There might be another lid underneath, use same method there. The place to open the watch is not exactly opposite the hinges, which is confusing at first. This has been placed away to avoid coming into conflict with the crown.

You can open the front as well, take a knife as described and do it. It could be that the hands are set from the front with a key and the winding of the watch is also done with a key. To stop guessing around, at least the back needs to be opened. You can perhaps do it with your thumbnail. If the watch is key-wind and key-set, it is probably made to be opened just with the thumb, but I guess the lid might sit too tight due to dirt and corrosion.

Thanks guys, I'm worried about scratching it up. I'll get the correct tools before I attempt this. It's really tight

The blue case opener knife is probably the best allround tool for that pupose. The yellow watch back case opener is more for difficult jobs. I seldomly use it on a pocket watch and more often on wrist watches.

I agree that it's just more than likely stuck. It should just pop open.
