    Universal Geneve cal.291

    Hello,
Considering purchasing this particular watch but am unsure of its authenticity, can anyone clarify the hands as originals ? I cant seem to find similar models anywhere?

Hands are plain pear, dial is lumed, so they do not belong together. None of the hands look to be correct.
The dial is a badly refinished one.
    Avoid.

    Cheers, Bob.

    Hi,

It's up to You to decide what to avoid :) If reworked dial does not burn Your eyes why should You avoid it? I wouldn't

Re-dials are a matter of taste. Like all restoration, there are some people that are firmly against (I'm not a fan of restored dials or polished cases on my vintage watches) but that doesn't mean that there is anything intrinsically wrong with a refurbished dial.

The biggest problem here is that it hasn't been done very well.

Refurbishing is an art into itself, one that is not dissimilar to cosmetic surgery. Just the right amount will make the best of what it's working with, but go too far and there's no coming back. Also, like cosmetic surgery, there are those who like everything natural. What you like is your choice, and nobody can tell you otherwise.

Having said that, most collectors prefer non-refurbished dials, and good-condition ones command a price premium, so the market has an opinion (important to bear in mind if you are a 'serial flipper').

I could tell something was poor with this dial and the dealer said it's 100%original... Such a shame as I do not know all the ins and outs of vintage universals.

UG is really tough, as there are just so many variations out there. Having said that, there's some basic markers that you can look for, and a Google image search for "Universal Geneve Moonphase Calendar" throws up a lot that you can reference. Whilst that kind of reference won't help you spot a good refurb vs an original, it will help you avoid the lemons like this one.

It's simple: doubt everything :) Then try to disprove the doubts
