    Universal Geneve Uni-Compax

    Hello there
who can tell me something (anything) on this Uni-Compax here? I feel like this is the much ignored son of the Compax family and there is little to read and learn from on the web
It is all about Tri-Compax mostly out there and the information available is mostly for other versions of the Uni, not this one (different hands and dial setups mostly)

    Here is some history:

    https://omegaforums.net/threads/univ...i-compax.4446/
UniversalChrono - Information on Universal Geneve Chronographs

I have a Compur with a cal. 285, which is the predecessor of the one you are looking at, and yours probably has the same movement. Yours is probably from the 1940s. It's hard to say if the hands are original, but they definitely could be. Something seems wrong about your case, since the bezel looks to be gold or gold-plated while the lugs seem to be plated with a white metal (although the plating is obviously in very bad shape). It would not have been sold with mismatched metal plating originally. Frankly, I would tend to avoid a watch with problems like that.

UG made their chronographs with many different variations of hands, dial, and case, so you won't always be able to find information about identical examples. In general, you need to use common sense and general design principles to determine originality.

This Uni-Compax needs a little bit of restoration, I think :)
But this is the kind of watches I always wanted to find.

They're relatively highly prized, most certainly amongst those of us who like UG.

As vujen says there's a bit of work to do on this one, so maybe work out in advance how far you want to take it once you've determined originality. If you're planning on selling you probably won't get a return (depending on how much you paid obviously).

I have actually seen a similar piece before with an incongruous gold bezel, but in that case the seller specifically noted that it had indeed been replaced.

Is the case chromed? I've never gone so far as to have a case re-plated but it could be an option here as it looks quite far gone. Personally I quite like some heavily worn pieces, but I'm probably in the minority.

here is a bit of additional information . i have the watch with me and it started running on the first couple of winds. I am not an expert again, but seems to have 287 cal inside. the caseback inside looks like the real deal. what amazes me (and I am OK with wearing worn out watches) is the lug shape and plating problem specifically around the lugs. the yellow ring around the glass looks pretty ok whereas the lugs look half yellow and half plate material. I wonder what the original lug material was.
edit: caseback serial number is at 970.000s which dates back the watch to 1942-43

My guess is that the main case is made of brass and is/was chrome plated. The case back itself will be steel. I have precisely such a chronograph from the 40s, and it was a relatively common practice mid century.

No problem. Chrome can be replated too. Never done this myself but you might be able to find people on here who can advise.
