    Universal watch c. 1946

    Gentlefolk;

Clearing out my father's closet upon his death, and found out he was a closet watch geek.

I have several inquires, so one at a time:

I have a Universal man's wristwatch, with an inset second movement at the 6 oclock position. Leather strap. I have a receipt noting the following:

    (written in ink)
    Universal Watch co.
    630 Fifth Avenue N.Y.C

    Date: 10 April 1946

    Montre No. 11245
(this matches the number on the back of the case)

The front of the receipt is in French, not my first language. But, the main part says:

    Manufacture des montres
    Universal
    Preet & Berthoud S.A.
    Geneve

    Hrologers depus 1894
Garantissent cette montre contre tout defaut de fabrication.

Any opinions what I have here?

    thx!

    Don

Well that's the full name (or was) of Universal Geneve:

Manufacture des Montres Universal Perret & Berthoud SA

You could contact them and ask for more information. UG's often have the serial number on the inside of the case back.

    table here:

Please don't PM me to ask for a valuation - I won't attempt one.

Yes, the watch IS Universal Geneve -- I left off the Geneve part since I didn't know it was part of the name.

Will see if I can figure out how to load a picture here.

eBay seems to indicate it is worth somewhere between $.99 and $1800, depending on details... <sigh>

    thx!

    Yes sir.

That is one gorgeous watch. Is it solid gold? BTW, we don't do valuations in here - its a matter of you finding something similar that has sold. But UG is a highly desirable brand.

I am a fan of old UG watches and that's a very nice looking example you have there.

No idea if it is gold or not... its a gold-like color, but no stamping indicating karat-rating, so I have no idea.

I eBayed around a bit and didn't really see anything comparable. But the gold factor does appear to be the deciding evaluation factor. Plus with the receipt and box, I figure there is _something_ here , just clueless as to what.

It this something to admire and polish once a year, or is it a wearable on state occassions level?

    Thx!

It wants to be worn. Wear it as a dress watch on suitable occasions. But running it at present may cause damage. The lubricating oil will have dried out by now - leaving an abrasive residue. It needs a service - COA - and then it will be fine for 5+ years.

I agree, have it serviced and wear it with fond memories.

I have my father's 1943 UG rose gold Enversteel, which I wear from time to time.

Good points... no use having a firearm you can't plink with, no use having a watch you can't wear.

I am having "Rolex" examined, and will drop off the UG at the same time.

    Thanks!
