Unknown Inherited Watch - Governor branded, swiss made, what is this?

    Guys,

I have inherited my great grandfathers watch(es), see the pics. Trying to figure out any info at all about this watch as I have no clue where to start.

The one on the band is a hand wind, works perfectly. The one on the right my great grandfather actually lost in the field one year while farming, and bought the other to replace it. A few years later he overturned it when working the field and that's how it looks now. Sadly not working.

Dial marking is Governor, Watertight, 17 Jewels, Antimagnetic. Bracelet is a Fixoflex (ROWI I believe?) and back casing is stamped 'Swiss Made'

Really any info or direction to look would be great as I'd love to learn a bit more about this watch and the history behind it.

    Thanks!

According to Mikrolisk, the Governor name has been associated with a few well-known brands, including Gallet, Racine, and Gruen. Photos of the movement will be needed if you want to learn more.

Thank you! Looks like I'll need to get more info from the movement as the next step. Didn't know about that Database, very handy.

Where did your grandfather purchase the watches? That might help narrow down the possibilities.

The box is from McKinney and Co., and would've been purchased in Toronto in the mid 30's or early 40's most likely. Not much available online, I think next step would be to take a look at the movement to get more details.

I started digging through the info on the mfrs you listed and I'm starting to be fairly sure this watch is a Gruen made, in the early 30s or so. There are a few very similar Gruen cases and dials from that era.

Next to decide if I care enough to open up the case for more info. Probably will leave that to a watchmaker.

    Thank you for the help!

Perhaps this was a typo, but this watch is clearly not from the 1930s. I would put it in the 1950s.

That seems too early for this style. In my opinion it looks like a 1950s or '60s design.

There are various service marks from the 40s and 50s inside the case.

    Thanks for the help!

I'm thinking this is a Gruen movement?
