    A very old lady Elgin

    Hi,

I bought this Elgin recently, and would like to know more about it. It has a 15jewels movement, 14K gold filled case, and a very nice bracelet. The watch is still running perfectly, but I think it is a watch made at about 1930's. I paid 30 euro for it. Maybe I paid too high for such a watch? Anyway, I think it looks like a real antique.

    Thanks for any input.

    Cheers,

    Zhang

    Hi -

I can't read the serial number well enough off the picture to do it for you, but you can look up the serial number here:

    http://elginwatches.org/databases/elgin_sn_intro.html

which is about as good a resource as you're going to find online.

I would also place it around the late 1920s/1930s. The movement is unusual, though: I don't see it in Shugart, for instance, and all the other rectangular Elgin movements have tonneau shapes, rather than the rectangular one shown here.

Neat. €30? Not overpriced, if it is running perfectly. Of course, it may be a tad small for you wrist.

    Very nice! Thanks for sharing.

Looks like the serial number is 35529190, which is an Elgin grade 519 from 1935.

    Hi Ray,

Many thanks. The S/N is 34529190. So it could be made earlier?

    Hi JohnF,

It is indeed a bit small for me. If it runs well, I may give it to my mother. My GF already turned it down saying that it is an ugly watch.

    Hi -

Here is where some problems arise. According to the Elgin database I linked to earlier, that makes it from 1933.

BUT: the serial number doesn't match the watch in the database. The watch in the database is an 18/0 size (i.e. pretty big) pocket watch, with damaskeening. Here are the results:

Serial Number SN Range Quanty Name Year grade size code jewels Adj/reg/etc.
    -------------- -------- ------ ---- ---- ----- ---- ------ ------ ------------
    34529190 34529001 10000 1933 484* 18/0s -3n1p 15j

Soooo, the mystery thickens. Shugart doesn't show that calibre shape; the Elgin database points to a completely different movement that simply doesn't match...only the 15 jewels matches up...

And unfortunately my other good source, Ranfft, only covers Elgin pocket watch movements.

    Hmmmm...

Let me do some more looking...

    Hi,

I have limited knowledge about this brand. So I will wait for the result of your research. Hopefully, it is something rare and valuable.

Actually 18/0 size is not that large only about 15mm diameter. A size 18 pocket watch is 45 mm, quite a bit larger. So the watch was made a couple of years earlier. That would make it a grade 484.
Over half a million of grade 484s were made between 1926 and 1937, so I would not say they are rare.
