    Vietnam Hamilton Watch?

    Hi everyone,
I just wanted to ask if you could check and see if this watch is legit or not.
I recently read an article about the Vietnam war watches and have some doubt about this watch I bought for my fiance.

    Thanks!
    Kate

    Re: Vietnam Hamilton Watch?

My feeling is that it is a fake unfortunately. These generally had sterile dials and unishell cases. The hands also look wrong and I haven't seen any that say "Hamilton" on the back. If you google a bit, you will find that there are a lot of fake GG-W-113 pieces around the internet. Do you have a photo of the movement? If it's a decent quality movement, at least it could be a fun watch to wear and not entirely a waste of money.

Do you mind saying where you bought this watch?

I agree with Dan. I owned a GG-W-113 made by Hamilton (trying to find photos to post and show you the difference). Authentic Hamilton GG-W-113s should not have signed dials. A quick search on eBay shows one seller in particular who is peddling these with signed dials. It could still be a fun watch to wear with a decent movement inside, so don't despair too much. Is there any chance you could return it? We can steer you toward genuine GG-W-113s.

I bought it on eBay and the seller I bought it from is named jewelry-07, I can't post a link in the reply. I should have done my research first. I think I can return it if it's a fake since the seller described it as an original Hamilton.
Thank you for your help, I will try to find an original one, my fiance really wanted to have it, so it's too bad this one is a fake :/

Don't sweat it too much, live and learn. We've all had our share of missteps both large and small. Hopefully you'll be able to return it.

Feel free to run your potential purchases by the group by posting them here, lots of amazing knowledge in this one place.

In fact it's against eBay's rules to sell fake items. So if the seller hesitates to take a return, you can report it to eBay.

Here are some photos of mine. You can see that only the movement is signed 'Hamilton.' It's advisable to see a photo of the movement before buying a watch. That is one of the more reliable ways to authenticate the watch. Name: Hammie3.jpg

Agree with Dan. If the seller does not refund your money, you can play hard ball and tell him/her that you will report to eBay unless refunded (though you might do so anyway after you get your money back).

What you have there is what was once a decent quality vintage Chinese watch that has been unfortunately butchered to make something more 'collectable'. If you look closely, you can still see the inscriptions that have been sanded off the case back. Sadly, this is quite common with alleged Vietnam-era US army watches on ebay.
