Vintage 1969 dress watch for around £1000

We’re looking to buy a Birthday gift and I thought we’d ask you knowledgable folk for some great ideas.

Has to be a 1969 watch and around £1000. I’ve initially been suggesting an Omega Deville/Constellation with a champagne dial and leather strap or Rolex Oyster Precision or something like that.

Not tied down to a particular maker, just looking for something which works with a suit and tie and is not too big.

Looking forward to any suggestions you might have.

    Many thanks.

The Rolex will not work within that budget. IWC makes some of my favorite dress watches.

By the way, would you consider dropping the "1969" requirement? If there is one thing that we have learned from these "birth-year" threads is that it is already hard enough to find a good vintage watch for a good price without these additional arbitrary constraints. I look at a lot of watches and I like to think that I've developed some level of expertise. If I wanted to find a really good 1950s or 1960s dress watch with your general requirements, it would probably take me several weeks to find a really good one for a fair price. If you add the additional constraint that it has to be from 1969, I'm afraid it might take me several months and a lot of effort.

Pinning down a precise year may be tricky for some brands unless they have an individual movement /case number along with a database that is still available -either online through either vintage watch collectors sites or the original watch companies records.
I`m not sure how good Omega records are but you may have a good chance.
From personal experience I would also suggest considering Longines too...though the late 1960`s was apparently the tail end of their time for their best movements they offer a free service to confirm the sale date and details of almost all their sales -and you can also request a free verification certificate which is a nice touch.

They also generally fetch lower prices so you should be able to find a great condition piece for less money which might even leave you with enough cash to have it serviced before you present the gift.
Search this and other forums for info on the best calibers etc.
They produced watches in both stainless steel, solid gold and gold-filled cases as far as I`m aware.
Manual winds, auto`s,date and no date..whichever style suits .

As an example a few pics of my 1963 Longines and the certificate ..it confirms the case number (on inner of case bacK) matches the movement number and the model series (in this case Flagship) also the dealership that purchased it from them.

This info might not be available for all Longines let alone other brands but it may help you to avoid buying "marriage" or "franken" watches if the seller can provide movement photo`s ,serial numbers etc prior to you splashing your cash.
IWC made some nice pieces as already mentioned..maybe Zenith would be worth a look too if you`re not set on buying a more widely recognised name.

I guess opening it to the birth decade of the 60s would give more scope. So, with that in mind, suggestions are welcome.

Right, I shall perhaps think about the 60s then. Thanks.

I wanted to show you the type of IWC I had in mind so you can see if you like it. This one is from 1964 and is a bit over your budget (you could of course make an offer). It's a nice example, with the main flaw being some damage to the outer edge of the dial near the top. In any case, if you like this one, with some patience you can get something similar within your budget.

I also agree that Longines Flagship/Conquest etc. would be a very nice choice.

I would not ditch the 1969 requirement so quickly

While most watches are hard to figure out of they are a 1969 or 1969, Seiko and Bulova are easy to find this out.

On every Bulova watch, there is a 2 character date code. 1969 is M9

On Seiko watches, the first number of the serial number is the date. plus with a Seiko, you can get one with a birth year and month on it.

The pre 1970 Seiko watches will also be marked waterproof instead of water resist.

Here are a few of mine.

Lots of 1969 watches on ebay - mostly Omega

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_o...h&_sacat=14324

Not 100 % sure what a dress watch is nowdays. More from the 1940 -1950's ? Very few people would now buy a watch to specifically wear to a special occasion.
Even James Bond wore a Rolex diver with a Nato strap to a casino in the early 1960's and it didn't look at all odd then.
I bought this blue dialled Omega in February for under half of your maximum budget. It's 39mm without crown, super accurate, has an Omega bracelet and came with a detailed instruction book and original 1969 guarantee card.
I can't think of any smart or dressy occasion that would prevent me from wearing it.

Good luck with your search !

Here is a nice automatic no-date IWC within your budget. Sorry about the late notice, the listing is ending quite soon.
