    Vintage Baume & Mercier

Just by looking at the front dial, is there anyway to identify if this is a fake or authentic Baume Mercier?

Don't have much information bout it but would like to know if it's a genuine piece.

It's a 10, cut horizontally. The chrono second does some sort of a disappearance act, where does it go!
Also based on the way the case is positioned, the 12 and 6 should have a different position in relation to eachother.

A horrible redial. I think that these numbers cut in half were originally intended to expose the subdials. However, whether it is a genuine Baume & Mercier, it is hard to say. Keep in mind that a lot of chronographs by brands much less recognizable, but which have used Landeron movements just as B&M, are being "converted" into B&M by repainting the dial and engraving the bridge with "B&M" inscriptions. A lot of such fakes come from South America. If this one is being sold from somewhere over there too, I'd even omit the fact that it is a redial and walk away without going into details. Still, plain curiosity makes me want to see the movement.

    Re: Vintage Baume & Mercier

THe first clue that it's not what it's pretending to be is the relative lack of "patina" on the dial relative to the case. The second is the slightly off-center subdial markings. Third, the "&" of "Baume & Mercier" should be between the "e" and "n" of Geneve (and more on the "n" side), not directly above the "e".

Note that this doesn't <necessarily> mean it's not a real B&M, only that the dial is at the very least been refinished, so there's no real way to know from just this picture.

The first time I looked at that, I instantly thought: either I am squinting or that dial has rotated to the right! A line drawn between the lugs from top to bottom wouldn't even come close to hitting the 12 in the middle! And probably the 6 too (although that one is a closer miss than the one at the top).....

Recased Landeron 48 in an incorrect case?

Thought I read somewhere here that the stem position is slightly off-centre, above the 3. Sure it was Roland.

Yes, you're right - it was Dr. Ranfft who pointed out that the subdials don't go in an exact line to the winding stem in Landeron movements. At the same time, I'm not worrying about the left-right axis, it's the top-bottom one that frightens the **** out of me!
