Vintage Gruen Precision - Updated Information

    Hello all,

I have a watch that my father left me, and was wondering if anyone could give me information related to its model, approximate age? The markings between the lugs are very small, but it appears to have a hallmark and the word plaque written on it. In addition, it looks like either the number 10 or 20 microns. Not 100% sure. The crystal is acrylic and the snap on back looks like brushed stainless steel. The manual movement is running and keeping fairly good time. I'd appreciate any assistance you may be able to offer.

    Thank you,
    Mike

Just found out that this watch was known as the"James Bond" model. It came with a Gruen in house made 17 jewel 510 caliber movement.

    Re: Vintage Gruen Precision Question..................

You haven't given us much to go on from those photos, so there's not much more to add to what you've already said. Not valuable, but a nice-looking watch in good condition. However, I'm sure it has sentimental value, so you should get it serviced and enjoy wearing it.

    Re: Vintage Gruen Precision Question..................

    Thank you Dan,
Really don't have anything else to add, the watch has very limited markings and I can't get the back off. My father won this watch at a charity bazaar in 1959 or 60. He was trying to win a Polaroid camera and spent his entire weeks pay doing it. This old Gruen was what he left with, and it took many years for my mother to forgive him for losing all that money. This was a charity event, but it cost my father dearly. My father put this watch away and only wore it on special occasions. I'm sure its monitory value isn't that great, but it does hold some wonderful memories, along with a great story.

The condition along with it's history for you certainly makes it worth a service so you too might be able to wear it occasionally. Wish I had a similar family piece.

I believe my father had this watch serviced a year or two prior to his passing. That would be about 10 years ago. I wind it every so often and it runs fine. It seems to keep fairly accurate time. I guess I should wear it once in a while, but I've become accustomed to the larger size of the more modern watches that I currently own. I appreciate your response.

    Re: Vintage Gruen Precision Question..................

    Hi,
I am almost new to this forum, so I just came across this thread right now.
The age question was already answered by yourself when you said your father won it in 1959 or 1960. 1960 is correct, this model was introduced in September 1960, so it was a brand new model at that time. Still in a very good shape, so keep it and the memories related!
The model is part of the "Achievement series" and called "Squire". It has been quite successful and was available for a couple of years until 1965.
As a proof here a very early advertisementfrom the first sales month which gives you probably most of the information.
