Re: Vintage "Heritage" Brand Swiss Made Watch - Help ID?

I can't find the thread, but we have seen diver-style watches like this before where the back is made to look like it will accept a wrench, but it's really just an illusion and the movement is accessed a different way. This back has a 10-sided polygon where the sides are bevelled. If the back were made to accept a wrench, the number of sides would generally be a multiple of 3 (many wrenches have three prongs), and the side would not be bevelled; they would have edges that a wrench could grip. If you tried to put a wrench on this case-back, it would just slip right off.

Edit: What I should have said it that the case-back has no "flats" for a wrench to grip.

Maybe a tool for Taubert cases would do- they have a decagonal back... FWIW, many vintage Zeniths also have decagonal backs.

Edit: didn't notice the bevels- in that case, it is most likely a faux-screw-in, press-in back.

5 ATM is not bad going for a snap-on of this era on a budget watch. Not that it would achieve it after all these years, but it does suggest that this watch was at least intended for snorkeling and other casual water activities.

Indeed, my theory about multiples of three was clearly wrong. I checked more of my watches, and several have 14-sided backs.

It could just suggest blatant false marketing.

Honestly, I'd have more confidence in it actually winning the The Pfortschaim gran Pricks than surviving snorkeling.

Thanks, all, for the input. My friction ball shipment was delayed, but I hope to have it today to figure this out once and for all. The caseback doesn't have a groove to pry the back off like other snap-on cases, so I'm hesitant to try it until I've attempted unscrewing. I'll circle back once I've given it a go.

Alright. I got my friction ball in and tried it out - didn't move. Then I took my pry tool at it and it popped right off! You guys were right! Picture of the movement below.

Next question - can anyone find the keyless works button to get the crown out? I'm not well versed in this kind of thing, but I've tried my hand at it with a few ETA movements, but I don't think I see the same opening... any hints?

And there is the KIF shock protection on a 1-jewel BFG 866. I've never extracted the stem from an 866, but my guess is that you give that small screw a half turn or thereabouts (not too much or things will fall out of place).

So there it is; all the secrets revealed of a cheap-and-cheerful sports watch, made towards the end of the era of mechanical dominance. There was probably little or no consideration given to repair or service in the design of this watch, but at least there is nothing preventing you from working on the watch (as with some dollar watches).
