    Vintage Pocket Watch Advice

I have a modern Swiss Tissot Savonette mechanical watch with hunter's case, but would like to add a vintage American railroad watch to my collection. I am looking at possibly an Elgin 571 or 478/Hamilton 992b. Any advice on these models? My budget is around $300.

I am also interested in Hamilton 924, though I can't find much information about it other than it is 17J. I have included a picture if anyone can help. Is it a good, accurate, and reliable watch?

    Re: Vintage Pocket Watch Advice

You have received info on the Hami 924 over on the NAWCC site. Just a basic 17 jewel size 18 watch in a case from a later time.

The Elgin 571 was a very good RR watch, but there is a potential problem with the winding system as there are no spare parts. The 478 is one version of the B. W. Raymond RR watch and would be OK if in good condition. The 992B is the best of the lot, but may be a bit more than your budget. You also need to budget for a service if you intend to run the watch very much.

Thanks for your help. I went ahead and purchased a 992, which is apparently the first model Enlivar from 1931.
