    Vintage Rolex! Your thoughts please!

    Hi all,

I know next to nothing about vintage watches, but I really like the look of this Rolex, 9c rose gold, manual wind from 1940s. Asking price $1650. So far it keeps time perfectly & doesn't need any service.

What do you think about this? Please help on deciding whether to buy this or not?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

My first instinct is no, but it usually is when it comes to vintage Rolex. I'd have a very close look at the engraving on the movement bridge; is it "gold" lettering, or are you just seeing the underlying brass from where someone cut through the plate finish? Lack of hallmarks (or any case marks really) mean that the case wasn't made in Switzerland or exported to Britain, and the lack of movement markings for a 1940 watch means it wasn't exported to the US either. The odd attempt to put a fancy finish on the inside of the caseback is disturbing too. Enough question marks to make me want the seller to demonstrate it's "rolex-ness" to me.

…and the dial looks a little too fine for a vintage watch… a refinish, surely? As I see you have 413 posts (!!!), you're obviously being modest when you say you don't know much watches, and so I won't bore you with banging on about the effect this would have on vintage watch value.

It looks almost perfect, a refined and understated beauty.
Almost, but the hands/dial/crown are yellow, the case is rose gold.
I agree that the dial also is too perfect, and the lack of hallmarks discouraging.

Edit- I do not think the movement originally came with this case either.
There are old movement holding screw marks, to the left at the bottom, and to the right at the top (of the present screw positions).

It says 31 Worlds Records inside the case back - not World Records - which I'd expect.

Please don't PM me to ask for a valuation - I won't attempt one.

Thank you all for your response and detailed information. I am not experienced in vintage watches at all. That's why I requested experts here to help & I am happy that I made the right decision to post it here.

    Many Thanks
