    Vintage Tradition Electronic

Hi, I just picked up this Vintage electronic Tradition brand watch. I read somewhere it was made by Hamilton. Anyone know any other info on this? I really love the design of the watch. It came with an awful band on it so I swapped it out for the blue nato strap. I plan on getting a better strap soon.

    Re: Vintage Tradition Electronic

I'm having trouble finding where Tradition was mentioned explicitly in my usual resources, though it very likely has a movement that was used by a lot of Swiss makers inside it and I'm reasonably sure Tradition did use early Hamilton Electric movements as well at a lower price point.

If you can get into the back safely, you can check the movements against this site's gallery:

Edit: If not, a picture of the back is usually enough to help. From the front, it looks like an ESA 9154 or 9158 movement.

I think they were a Sears watch. The movement, who knows until the back is opened

Probably the 7j ESA 9158 (Day & Date). Hamilton, Tissot and Heuer have all been mentioned as the possible makers of these Tradition watches for Sears.

    Regards.

It looks a lot like a Benrus Citation. These use the Swiss-made ESA electronic movement also used by Hamilton and many others. Does it have a battery hatch on the back?

Here is the inside. The wheel rotates in the movement. I don't want to sound stupid, but does that mean it's charging the battery? If so, thats awesome.

That's the 9158 movement. It works in the opposite way, the battery is making the balance wheel oscillate instead of a mainspring providing the power. That little copper coil under the balance is an electromagnet, which pulls on the balance wheel, letting it swing back as timed by the hairspring. There's some feedback loop wizardry where it knows when to activate the electromagnet based on the current created by the motion of the magnet on the balance wheel. A wonderfully inventive piece of engineering on these.

If you want a rotor that charges the battery, you're looking at a Seiko Kinetic, but it will tick like a usual quartz watch.

I realized after i took this pic that the date was wrong. It has been corrected. But the new band seems to fit the watch nicely. What do you guys think?
