    Vintage Wittnauer - great dial

    Hello all

I bought this watch a few months ago and although it's not my usual style (late 60's /early 70's) I really like it. Even its modest proportions - 33mm exc crown - can' t keep it off my wrist. What really impresses me about this watch is the waffle dial, it's beautiful and in great condition. The seller said he thought the movement might be a Felsa Bi-Dynator and thought the watch dated from late 50's or early 60's. This is my only Wittnauer and I have to confess my ignorance about the brand and about this watch, does anyone have information on either?

All help/information gratefully received as ever, thanks for reading.

    Cheers

Wittenauer belonged to Longines at this time:

    Hope this helps, Gary.

Btw: I have a Universal Geneve bumper auto with a similar dial:

:thanks Axel, good sight and fine example of a Universal you have there, I like the lugs on that one.

OK, I've been doing some digging on this movement and does it appears to be a Felsa Bidynator 695. Had the case off and made a few notes off the markings to qualify my initial suspicions, it's a lovely little movement and while I've owned it has kept very good time. Does anyone have any info on these movements?

    Cheers

    Hi -

    Lovely, lovely watch.

The Bidynator is a really neat movement. First, it was the first movement to wind in both directions, starting in 1942 with the cal. 410 (1944: cal. 415 with central seconds). Yours is one of the modifications to the second-generation model that was introduced in 1947 with the cal. 690, the 695 was with the decentral seconds; the 692 and 694 were with dates, the 694N with date and GMT 24-hour hand, the 693 with calendar, the 697 with day/date, the 699 with power reserve indicator.

Second, the watch has a large jewel for the rotor to turn on! That's right, the rotor itself pivots on a jewel! The Bidynator mechnism itself uses a pivoting set of gears to transform the movement of the rotor for the winding mechanism to use.

Felsa was acquired, of course, by ETA in the 1980s.

Nice looking watch! I have a couple of Wittnauers;a man's and a ladies'.The man's watch is an early electronic movement using a battery to wind the mainspring.Note the word,"transistorized" on the dial.Probably early 60's.I bought it at a flea market for a dollar and it cost me more for a battery(uses a 344;not easy to find). It gains about 5 minutes every two weeks but what do ya want for a buck!
